Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Tray™ Home?
A Tray Home is a transportable house that, when collapsed, fits within a standard Conex container. However, once inserted into a housing bay, a Tray Home Suite expands to 24 feet wide, 40 feet long, and up to a 14-foot ceiling. With up to 16 ft ceilings available with a Tray Home, a loft option is available.

How does a Tray Home arrive?
A Tray Home arrives in a collapsed form. Then the floor folds down, and the interior walls slide out, similar to a slide-out on an RV, to provide up to 24 feet of floor width.

Where can a Tray Home be installed?
A Tray Home can be installed into several different locations. It could be in a rural area with an In-Fill design of one bay or an urban setting with a tower of 100s Tray Homes.
How do I find a place to live in my Tray Home in another city?
Mobile Interiors, Inc. will have a website and an app with a nationwide database of all the available bays. A bay is the opening into which a Tray Home slides.
How do I schedule a Tray Home for pickup when I move?
You can use the App or website, or call us at Mobile Interiors, Inc.
How much will a Tray Home cost?
Depends of the floor coverings, cabinets and appliances selected, but we are estimating $80,000.
How much does it cost to move a Tray Home?
The typical cost of moving a 40-foot Conex across the United States is $3,000 to $5,000.
Affordable Housing for All
Affordable housing is becoming a national crisis, yet many suggested solutions still conform to traditional housing concepts.
A Tray™ Home on the other hand is an innovative alternative that allows the owner to collapse and move their unit when desired making it a flexible and adaptable option for a wide range of living situations.
A Tray Home is a patented pre-made unit consisting of a foldable floor and two lower side walls. It is designed to be inserted into a host frame. The frame supplies the end walls, the upper side walls, the ceiling and all of the utilities required to make the unit safe, secure and inhabitable.
The unit comes with all of the standard cabinets, counters, appliances, fixtures and flooring built in. When installed and expanded the unit is quite spacious given its cost. For example, the “Suite" model has 960 square feet of floor space and is priced around $75,000. A frame-supplied loft adds yet another 320 square feet of usable space.
When relocating, this collapsable unit fits comfortably inside a Conex, making its readily transportable for individuals who frequently relocate.
As personal property, a Tray Home need not involve real estate brokers or title companies in their purchase/sale. Furthermore, the owners of the frame are protected from most any damage which might be caused by the occupant.
The compact nature of a Tray Home offers a unique opportunity not only for individuals who wish to minimize their environmental impact but also for the military, universities, municipalities, and even HUD to provide housing at an affordable cost.
